What a Scholarship Offer Actually Means

A college coach says they are offering you a scholarship. That sounds final. It is not. There is a big difference between a verbal offer and a written one. And knowing the difference can save you a lot of confusion.

A verbal offer is a conversation. The coach tells you they want you. It is exciting. But it is not binding. Either side can change their mind until a National Letter of Intent is signed. I have seen players turn down other schools based on a verbal offer, then watch the coach get fired or the program change direction. Do not make that mistake.

Here is what matters. Ask for the written offer. Ask for the scholarship breakdown. How much is tuition, how much is housing, how much is covered. Get it in writing before you make any decisions. And keep talking to other schools until you have signed papers. Offers are real when the pen hits the page. Everything before that is conversation.
